Checklist for Application Requirement

  • Duly completed Application Form
  • Presentation slides based on PSP's Template
  • A copy of Collaboration Agreement and/or Non-Disclosure Agreement related to the IP Application (if any).
Additional requirements:

  1. For patent, please provide the followings:
    • Attachment of Prior Art Search (if any):
      1. abstract, drawing, claim parts of the closest patent specification.
      2. publication.
      3. any other forms of disclosure, eg. proceedings newspaper excerpt etc.
    • Attachment of draft Patent Specification (encouraged)

  2. For industrial design, please provide the following:
    • Attachment of closest drawing(s) from Prior Art Search (if any)

  3. For trade mark, please provide the following:
    • Attachment of closest mark(s) from Prior Art Search (if any)

2. Work must be from an institutionalized research, unless the inventor /author willingly agrees to assign all rights over the work to the university (by duly completing and signing the Application Form). Please refer to the Universiti Putra Malaysia (Research) Rules 2012 at http://www.rmc.upm.edu.my/dokumen/PTPPY1_kaedahupmbi.pdf

3. Project leader must present during the presentation session. We encourage the project leader to do the presentation. Co-inventor(s) and/or co-owner(s) from other institution(s) is/are encourage to attend the session.

Evaluation Criteria


For patent application, the evaluation of the presentation will be according to the following criteria:

  • Patentability requirements:
    1. New - the invention has not been publicly disclosed in any form (e.g. publication, exhibition, conference, and seminar) anywhere in the world;
    2. Inventive step - the invention must not be obvious to someone with knowledge and experience in the technological field of the invention AND must have advancement in any the technical aspect;
    3. Industrial applicable - can be mass produced

  • Commercial prospect – current and future prospect for making commercial gain from the IP

For industrial design application, the evaluation of the presentation will be according to the following criteria:

  • Aesthetic aspect of the 2D or 3D design
  • A ready prototype (encouraged)
  • Outline drawings (perspective, front & side views)
  • Commercial prospect – current and future prospect for making commercial gain from the IP. Here, product functionality might be required if the ID application is in relation to design of a product.

For trademark application, the evaluation of the presentation will be according to the following criteria:

  • Non-descriptive (for word) – we encouraged coined word
  • The mark must have been used in business; or if not yet use in business, must immediately be used in business
  • Commercial prospect – current and future prospect for making commercial gain from the IP.

For copyright application, the evaluation of the presentation will be according to the following criteria:

  • Proof of originality – a work that result from researchers effort and skill, and not substantially copied from any other work.
  • List of references – for literary work
  • Demonstration of completed work – software / video / music. For other type of work, please bring the hardcopy of the completed work if not provided with the Application Form. Commercial prospect – current and future prospect for making commercial gain from the IP (encourage)
